Style Guide for Authors
DWI Journal: Law & Science welcomes contributions that address topical and timely issues of relevance to attorney involved in defending drunk/drugged driving cases. These may be either legal practice topics or forensic science topics.
Successful submissions will typically be structured around identifying and developing a problem or issue and providing relevant solutions. Manuscripts should be written in clear, non-technical language, with a broad legal readership in mind. While the language should be engaging and informative, authors should avoid the use of jargon and technical terminology.
Manuscripts should be prepared consistent with the following guidelines. Manuscripts which do not conform to these guidelines may be returned to the author(s) without review for reformatting.
1. Double-space, use a 12 point font, and one-inch margins throughout the entire manuscript, including endnotes, tables, figures, and graphs. Manuscripts should not exceed 25 pages, all-inclusive. All pages, save the title page, should include pagination. Page numbers should appear centered at the bottom of each page.
2. The first page of the manuscript should include the title of the manuscript and contact information for each author that includes author name, affiliation, complete address, email address, telephone number, and fax number. The corresponding author should be clearly noted.
3. The second page of the manuscript should include the title of the manuscript, an abstract of approximately 100 words, and four to five key words that accurately reflect the content of the manuscript. The text should begin on the third manuscript page. Abstracts should be designed to provide a comprehensive overview of the manuscript in a manner that draws the reader's attention.
4. Incorporate headings and sub-headings throughout the manuscript to aid readability. First order headings should be centered and all capital letters. Second order headings should be centered and use both upper and lower case letters. Headings should be descriptive and informative, yet not standard academic style. The aim is to guide the reader with innovative and lively language.
5. DWI Journal: Law & Science follows standard legal referencing styles. Authors should carefully document their work while at the same time keeping references to a minimum. Instead of standard academic referencing, authors should incorporate references in a conversational style. For example, rather than stating "Head (2004) noted", authors might say "Head, in his 2004 article on breath-analysis flashlights, noted". A complete list of references cited should appear at the end of the text, and preceding any tables, figures, or graphs. The references should begin on a new manuscript page.
6. All tables, figures, or graphs should appear individually on a separate manuscript page. These should clarify or supplement the manuscript text. Please indicate the appropriate placement of tables, figures, and graphs within the text by using [Insert Table 1 about here]. These should appear following the References in the following order: tables, figures, graphs.
7. Authors should carefully proofread their manuscripts prior to submission. Please pay careful attention to spelling and grammar, in particular. Also, please avoid gender specific language, relying instead on the plural format for nouns. Manuscripts with extensive errors will be returned without review.
8. Submit all manuscripts electronically in MS Word-compatible file format to the editor at dwieditor@gmail.com. Submissions will be acknowledged shortly after receipt. Editorial decisions may take up to three months. Articles typically appear in print one to six months after acceptance.
